Photo etched, also termed optical lithography or UV lithography, it is a process used in to pattern parts of a film or the bulk of a substrate. First step of photo etched is to uses light to transfer a pattern from photo mask to a light-sensitive chemical on the substrate. Go by a series of chemical treatments, the pattern is exposed to the metal plate.

The production process of photo etched shares some fundamental principles with photography, which are formed by exposing a projected image directly or using an optical mask.

Compared to other processes, photo etched can create small patterns, many small apertures such as slots and holes can be etched simultaneously. Photo etched can produce complex parts with fine detail accurately and at the same time also reduced mould costs and labor costs.

The main disadvantages of photo etched are a flat plate required to start with, it does not create high relief nor domed surfaces different from what stamping or die casting processes can deliver.
